Strengthening Maritime Bonds: India and Africa Launch AIKEYME 2025 in Tanzania

On April 13, 2025, a significant milestone in maritime cooperation was achieved as India and nine African nations inaugurated the first edition of the Africa-India Key Maritime Engagement (AIKEYME) in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania.
This six-day multilateral naval exercise aims to bolster regional maritime security and foster stronger ties between participating nations.

Participating Nations:
  • India

  • Tanzania (co-host)

  • Comoros

  • Djibouti

  • Kenya

  • Madagascar

  • Mauritius

  • Mozambique

  • Seychelles

  • South Africa

The exercise is structured into two phases:
  1. Harbour Phase (April 13–15): This phase includes joint training sessions focusing on anti-piracy operations, information sharing, seamanship, and Visit Board Search and Seizure (VBSS) exercises. Indian Naval ships are also open to visitors, promoting engagement with the local population.

  2. Sea Phase (April 16–18): The sea phase involves live drills emphasizing coordinated maritime patrols, rescue operations, tactical maneuvering, and enhancing interoperability among the navies.

AIKEYME 2025 aligns with India's vision of "Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions" (MAHASAGAR), emphasizing collaborative efforts to address common maritime challenges such as piracy, trafficking, and illegal fishing.

The inauguration ceremony was graced by dignitaries including Dr. Stergomena Lawrence Tax, Tanzania’s Minister of Defence and National Service, and Sanjay Seth, India's Minister of State for Defence. Their presence underscores the importance of this initiative in strengthening defense relationships and promoting regional stability.

Indian Naval Participation:
  • INS Chennai (Destroyer)

  • INS Kesari (Landing Ship Tank)

  • INS Sunayna (Patrol Vessel)

These vessels play a crucial role in the exercise, demonstrating India's commitment to enhancing maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region.

As AIKEYME 2025 progresses, it sets a precedent for future collaborations, reinforcing the shared commitment of India and African nations to secure and prosperous maritime domains.
